R&D Manager Adhesives

The R&D manager ensures that the research team focuses on both product innovations and efficiency improvements in the existing portfolio. In addition, sufficient support must be provided both to market demands and to solving specific problems from production. The R&D manager will set up a search “strategy” in order to speed up EOC’s innovations in the adhesives market. He/she will ensure proper functioning of this support unit in a manner consistent with the needs of safety, the environment, quality, profitability and the corporate rules so that the support unit delivers sufficient strategic product innovations with the aim of maximising and optimising the product range to meet the need of the customers. The position becomes vacant as a result of an internal realignment.


  • Setting the objectives of the R&D department in the short and long term in consultation with the Sales Department and the functional manager of the adhesives BU
  • Analysing customer needs and proposals for new products or adaptations to existing products in order to satisfy them.
  • Approving raw materials and suppliers for all production companies with support to EOC Purchasing
  • Performing literature and patent searches, attending seminars, maintaining contact with suppliers and research institutes, external companies and conferences and market surveys in order to gather and introduce new ideas and knowledge
  • Translating the targets for R&D into concrete internal and/or external research programmes and supervising the achievement of these targets
  • Responsible for taking out patents
  • Responsible for information and training in connection with the launch of new products
  • Managing personnel in order to achieve optimal product development
    • Providing day-to-day coaching of employees and identifying training needs
    • Managing personnel planning and allocation of resources to projects to achieve the set targets
    • Ensuring that the personnel comply strictly with safety regulations
    • Ensuring that the personnel comply with work regulations, environmental regulations and agreements made at company level
    • Carrying out performance reviews
  • Advising the production department on the basis of his/her specific knowledge of the composition and properties of the products and raw materials
  • Assisting production in the event of anomalies during the production process in order to analyse and correct the problem with the process so that there is no loss of production and/or no creation of waste
  • Setting up projects with the production management in order to improve the production process and/or product quality
  • Assisting production so that off-spec material can be processed in such a way that quality is minimally affected
  • Managing lab equipment and coming up with proposals for adaptations if required (asset management)


  • Education, knowledge and experience:
    • Minimum Master’s Degree in Chemical Sciences
    • Minimum 5 – 7 years experience as a researcher in R&D department
    • Experince in managing a team is an advantage
  •  Technical skills:
    • Solid knowledge of (water-based) adhesives and/or polymerisation (vinyl acetate) and/or hotmelts
    • Proficiency in English or Dutch; knowledge other languages is an advantage
    • Knowledge of standard lab tools
